As California’s southernmost city, San Diego enjoys long, torrid summers and mild winters. And even though summers are best for enjoying its beaches and beautiful surroundings, it is winter when San Diego reveals its true personality: a multicultural, vibrant city, with lots of touristy attractions but also a rich cultural life.

With the summer crowds gone, there will be plenty of sights, activities and winter events in San Diego that you can enjoy at your own pace. Here are a few suggestions of what to do in San Diego in a wintery day:

December Nights

Every year in December San Diego tourists (and locals) get the chance to visit the city’s museums for free. The event takes place at Balboa Park, one of San Diego’s prime attractions. In addition to strolling through the museums for free, there will also be plenty of food to represent San Diego’s multiculturalism, as well as dance and music to keep you entertained.

Whale Watching

Another free and truly spectacular event that takes place in San Diego in winter is the arrival of the grey whales. This is certainly a must see for anyone visiting San Diego, especially when taking into consideration that the these fascinating sea creatures are visible from the shore. A good observation point is considered to be Point Loma.

Carlsbad Marathon and Half-Marathon

Ready to test your limits in a ‘by the shore’ marathon? This long established San Diego sports events welcomes marathon and half-marathon runners every year at the end of January. As with every such event, the whole idea is to participate, and running along the coast can be fun, too, unless it happens to be one of those rainy and grim January days…

And no, you won’t see Santa and the reindeer riding the waves, each with a board under the feet/hooves, but they will definitely arrive on water. No more spoilers from here on…
